What is the Pantone Color of the Year and is it really that important?

Introduction of The Color Of the Year

Pantone introduced the concept of Color of the Year in 1999 (Cerulean Blue 15-4020). Originally, Pantone aimed to establish an educational framework connecting colors with diverse cultures to foster engagement among artists, designers, and color aficionados. Fundamentally, Pantone enhances a universal language of colors that informs essential decisions in different phases of branding and manufacturing processes.

Pantone’s Color of the Year does indeed serve as a key trendsetter. Pantone researchers examine each year objectively and choose a unique color that mirrors global culture. Influences on the chosen color are drawn from various sources, including the entertainment industry, travel, films, lifestyle trends, and socioeconomic factors.

A primary goal of Pantone's color selection is to evoke emotions. Although we may collectively prefer certain colors, Pantone’s color of the year is determined by the communication of the current global culture. In many respects, the color of the year mirrors our global condition.

Pantone Color of The Year: Where Can We See It?

You can see the nuances of Pantone’s Color of the Year manifesting everywhere— in commercials, editorials, paintings, and interior design. One of the most prominent settings for Viva Magenta (or any Pantone color) was within interior design. Whether in an office or a pop-up shop, the Pantone color of the year often appears in the room’s accents and decor.

Additionally, the Color of the Year is often expressed through art and, of course, fashion. Pantone encourages artists from all disciplines to consider its color selections.
